Professor: Scheduling Items for Homework and Review (New Top Hat)
The scheduling feature allows you to make Top Hat content and folders of content available to students for a limited period of time. This is a great tool if you want to assign materials for students to complete outside of class during a predetermined period as you can simply set it and forget it!
We'll work through the scheduling process by demonstrating with a folder, but keep in mind that you can also schedule questions, discussions, slides, or pages!
To begin, identify the individual item or folder of items you'd like to schedule for student access and click on it in the dashboard.
In the preview pane on the right hand side of your screen, click the Assign button and then select Schedule.
You first need to choose the status you'd like to make the content available to your students as, homework or review. Homework will allow students to submit responses which will be recorded and graded. The review status on the other hand will allow students to respond to content items but their responses will not be recorded or graded. Further, students will receive feedback as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to content in the review status.
There are a couple of additional things to consider when assigning pages content in the homework status. For a more detailed look at scheduling pages content for homework please see here: Professor: Making Pages Content Available to Students (New Top Hat)
Next, click on the Starts date to define the date and time you would like the scheduled material to become available to students. You can select the date on the calendar provided, and to set the time simply click on the time below the calendar. This will reveal the time selector where you can use the arrows to navigate to your scheduled start time, being sure to note the AM/PM indicator.
Use the procedures outlined above for defining the Starts date and time to set the date and time you want the content to no longer be available for students to access.
Setting the Scheduler
When you're happy with the scheduler's parameters simply click Done. Scheduled content will be tagged with Assigned to indicate that this content has an upcoming assignment scheduled. Clicking on a content item that is tagged as Assigned will reveal for you the scheduler's parameters.
Clicking the Unassign button will remove previously set scheduling, so changing the parameters is easy, simply unassign the original scheduling and follow the procedures outlined above to identify a different time.
Scheduler vs. Question Response Timer
Scheduling content is used for controlling the state of items across a duration of hours or days whereas question response timers are used for controlling the state of a question for a duration of seconds. For more information on question timers please see here: Professor: Setting a Response Timer on your Question (New Top Hat)
