Student: iOS App Overview (Version 4.x and earlier)
If you bring an Apple mobile device with you to class (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch), you can access Top Hat using Top Hat's iOS app.
Downloading the App.
To download the iOS Top Hat app from Apple's app store, search for 'Top Hat,' select the top result to download and Install. The Top Hat app is free to download, with or without a registered account. To learn more about the Top Hat app click here.
Note: Due to software restrictions our app is only available on iOS 6.0 or later.
Creating An Account & Signing In
After opening the app for the first time, you will be asked sign in using your account credentials.
Your account credentials give you access to Top Hat on any device, you do not need to create a new account when using a new device.
If it is the first day of class and you have not yet signed up for Top Hat, you can create a 7 day free trial account using the app. Tap 'Create Account' and follow in the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process.
After signing in you will be brought to the Course Lobby. The Course Lobby is where you may enroll or dis-enroll from a Top Hat course and view any courses you are already enrolled in. To enroll in a new course tap 'Add Course', then search for your course by course name, professor's name, or Top Hat join code. Next, select the applicable course and tap 'Enroll'.

After entering your course, you will be brought to the Lecture tab. This is where content will appear when it is made available by the professor. When a professor asks a question or takes attendance in class, questions will be displayed on your screen for you to answer. To input an answer, select or type your response, then tap 'Submit'.
Remember you need to tap 'Submit' for your answer to be recorded in your professor's Gradebook.
After responding to a question, a blue notification will appear confirming the submitted answer. You may change your mind and resubmit your answer as long as the question is open in the 'Ask' status. Top Hat will only record the last answer submitted.
There are also several other tabs from which to access content. You may open each, by first tapping the three-horizontal-bar icon on the top left of your screen.
A red notification will be displayed when a question is set to 'Homework' or 'Review'. To access Homework or Review questions, tap on the appropriate tab.
Your professor may also create a Top Hat Tournament. To participate in an active Tournament, tap the Tournament tab and answer questions in single elimination rounds against your classmates for points.
You may tap the Gradebook tab to keep track of your attendance and/or grades. The Gradebook displays an overview of all active, answered and unanswered items in a course, your cumulative course average and your attendance mark.
The 'Pending' tab stores all of your offline mode submissions until your account is reconnected to the internet.
In the event of technical difficulties or connectivity issues when using the Top Hat app, you will be asked to use Offline mode:
In Offline mode, you can use the 4 digit Question/Discussion ID code to submit answers to activated questions. These answers will be saved to be submitted once a more secure wifi connection is established.
Always use Offline mode to preserve your answers during connectivity issues.

To access or change your account settings, go to the Course Lobby and tap on the three-horizontal-bar icon on the top left corner of the screen. Then tap 'My Account' to view or edit your account credentials including email, username, password and student ID.
