Professor: Making Pages Content Available to Students (New Top Hat)

One of the really great things about creating interactive digital documents within the Top Hat Pages Module is the ability to track students' progress through your document and even assign grades! You can assign a page document to your students in either the Review or Homework statuses, and you can even schedule it for a date in the future! Start by clicking where it says Assign in the upper right hand corner of your previewed pages document.


Review Status
Activating a page in review status will allow students to respond to questions in the page but their responses will not be recorded or graded. In the review status, students will receive feedback as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions. Further, after two incorrect attempts students can choose to reveal the correct answer for study purposes, and view an explanation if you provided one!



Homework Status
By default, activating a page in homework status will allow students to respond to questions in the page and responses will be recorded and graded.

Once the document is assigned to homework you have the option to adjust the weighting and other options by clicking where it says Weighting & Options in blue under the Unassign button.

Set Total Grade Weighting
By default, the page will be graded according to the values assigned to each graded item within the pages document. You can choose to change the total grade weighting of the entire page however. Adjusting the Set total correctness or Set total participation values will proportionally scale the graded items to add up to your custom weights. This option is commonly used to prevent pages with a high volume of graded content taking over a course's gradebook.

Learning Mode
Activating a page with learning mode will have student responses graded for participation only and forces the correctness total for the page to be 0. Learning mode also enables feedback to students as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions and after two incorrect attempts students can choose to reveal the correct answer giving them an opportunity to learn from their mistakes!

Scheduling Pages Content for Homework
You can also schedule pages content to become available to your students in the homework status. On account of the various grading options available to pages assigned in the homework status, there are a couple of additional things to consider however. If you recall from above, you can assign your pages content in one of the following homework categories: default grading, custom grading, or learning mode. When an item is activated using the scheduler it will automatically apply the homework category that was most recently selected for this item. 

Let's work through an example together to clarify! Professor Plum wants to schedule a chapter of his interactive textbook to his students in Learning Mode. He has never assigned the chapter, so if he were to simply schedule it, the page content would automatically be available to students with default grading applied to the chapter. Professor Plum needs to simply assign the chapter in Learning Mode momentarily (see instructions above), immediately unassign it, and then schedule the chapter for later access. This will ensure that the chapter is available to students in Learning Mode, the most recent homework category applied to the pages content item.
