Professor: Making Pages Content Available to Students (Old Top Hat)
One of the really great things about creating interactive digital documents within the Top Hat Pages Module is the ability to track students' progress through your document and even assign grades!
Displaying a Page with No Graded Items
If your page contains no questions, discussions or demos, you can make it accessible to your students by assigning it in the review status. Students will now be able to view the page on Top Hat using their computer or mobile device.
Displaying a Page with Graded Items
A. Review Status
Activating a page in review status will make the page accessible to students via the dashboard on the left side of their screen. Students will be able to respond to questions in the page but their responses will not be recorded or graded.
In review status, students will receive feedback as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions. Further, after two incorrect attempts students can choose to reveal the correct answer for study purposes!
B. Homework Status
Activating a page in homework status will make the page accessible to students via the dashboard on the left side of their screen. Students will be able to respond to questions in the page and responses will be recorded and graded.
Homework - Default Grading
Default grading means that the total grade of the page item will be the aggregate of the items inside it. With default grading enabled, students will not get feedback as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions.
Homework - Custom Grading
Custom grading means that the page assessment items are aggregated into a single mark, and this total mark is adjusted to a custom total that you choose. The grade for the page or for each assessment item is not affected, but it does change the weight of the page amongst other assessment items within the gradebook.
With custom grading enabled, students will not get feedback as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions.
Homework - Custom Grading + Learning Mode
Activating a page with learning mode enabled forces the correctness total for the page to be 0 and enables feedback to students as to whether they responded correctly or incorrectly to questions. Further, after two incorrect attempts students can choose to reveal the correct answer giving them an opportunity to learn from their mistakes!
Scheduling Pages Content
Using the Top Hat scheduler feature allows you to make your pages content available to students for a limited period of time. This is great if you only want students to have access to the materials for a predetermined window of time. For example, professors will often assign a chapters worth of content to their students as homework, to be completed by a designated due date, after which students will no longer receive credit for participating.
To set a schedule on a pages content item, click on the book icon associated with the item to reveal the Set Status menu and select the Schedule Item clock icon from the professor's toolbar.
The Start Status is the initial state your pages content will be in for the duration of the schedule. You may choose between Homework (Active) or Review.
The End Status is the state your pages content will change to once the schedule has expired. You may choose between Review or Closed (Inactive).
Select the date and time when your schedule will start.
Select the date and time when your schedule will end.
When you've finished defining the scheduler's parameters, click Schedule.
Scheduled items will appear in your content dashboard with Schedule Item icon to indicate that this content item has been scheduled.
