Professor: Asking a Top Hat Question (New Top Hat)

Top Hat’s questions can be utilized in the classroom or out to engage students, facilitate comprehension check-ins, and gain realtime feedback and polling!

Asking a Top Hat Question in the Classroom
The most common manner in which to ask a Top Hat question is to embed it directly into your uploaded PowerPoint or PDF slide decks so that the question is automatically activated when you reach that point in your presentation. It is possible to simply select a question and activate it independent of a slide presentation as well however. 

Embedded in your Slide Presentation
Once embedded in your slide deck, you can click on your first slide, and in the preview pane on the right hand side click Present to begin your presentation. You can navigate through your slide deck using the left and right navigation arrow buttons in the bottom left hand corner of your screen and when you reach the point in your presentation where you embedded your Top Hat question, the question will automatically be available for student submissions. 

The question will be projected on your screen and accessible on students' devices to answer. 

If you'd like to review the histogram of student responses with your students, simply click the graph icon along the bottom. This will automatically disable submissions so students can no longer answer the question. Alternatively, if you don't plan on showing the results, when you think students have had enough time to respond, click the turquoise pause button in the lower centre of the question screen to disable submissions and prevent further student responses. Whichever flow you prefer, clicking the checkmark icon at any time will reveal the correct answer!

When you're finished with the question, simply navigate to the next slide. It really is that easy!

Independent of a Slide Presentation
Activating a Top Hat question that is independent of a slide presentation is just as easy! Simply click on the question in your dashboard to display it in your preview pane, and then click on the Present in the upper right hand corner. 

The question will be projected on your screen and accessible on students' devices to answer.

When you're finished with the question, simply click on the blue drawer pull button in the lower left hand corner and then END to return you to your main course page where you can select another Top Hat content item to present or proceed with your lecture until you're ready for your next Top Hat element.

Assigning a Top Hat Question Outside the Classroom
Another very common use of Top Hat questions is to assign then to students to complete outside of the classroom as homework. To activate a question for student submissions outside of the classroom you'll first want remove it from any slide presentation it may be embedded within (this case easily be done by dragging and dropping it outside of the slide folder). Then, simply click on question to reveal it in the preview pane and in the upper right hand corner click where it says Assign.

From the popup menu that appears, select Homework to allow your students to submit answers to the question outside of the classroom using their computers and smart devices. Selecting Review will allow students to read the question, review the response they previously submitted, and allow them to view the correct answer.

The question will be tagged indicating to you that it is currently available to students as homework and the date in which the item was assigned to homework.
