Professor: Taking Attendance (New Top Hat)

Taking attendance with Top Hat is quick and easy! There are a few different ways in which to initiate an attendance session, but regardless of the journey, the outcome is the same - Top Hat will generate a random 4-digit attendance code that will be displayed only on the projected screen in your lecture hall. Students may check in for attendance by submitting the session's attendance code in the field provided when logged into their Top Hat account using a mobile application (iOS or Android) or web browser, or by texting the attendance code to the Top Hat SMS response number.

Attendance as Part of your Slide Presentation
Most professors choose to begin each of their lectures by taking attendance with Top Hat. To do this, click on the first slide you'd like to present to select it and display it in your preview pane. When you're ready to present to your students, simply click the Present button in the upper right hand corner.

This will reveal for you the presentation launch page where you can decide if you'd like to Start With Attendance or Start Presentation. Click the orange Start With Attendance to project the session's 4-digit attendance code.

When you are happy with the attendance figure for the lecture, you can click on the pause/disable button in the lower centre of your screen to prevent students from submitting the attendance code further. When you're ready to proceed with your lecture after disabling attendance submissions, simply click the right advance arrow to launch your slide presentation.

If you want to leave the attendance session open throughout the lecture, simply proceed with your lecture by clicking the right advance arrow to launch your slide presentation without having disabled the attendance session. This will allow students to continue submitting the attendance code until you either end the presentation or click on the attendance code to return to the attendance session page and disable the session.

The data collected while taking attendance with Top Hat will be stored in the gradebook where it can be easily reviewed, managed or exported to an Excel spreadsheet.

Quick Attendance
You can also take attendance on the fly without initiating a slide presentation if you'd like. To do so, click on the blue Create button as you would to create Top Hat content such as questions and discussions, and select Quick Attendance.

When you are happy with the attendance figure for the lecture, you can click on the pause/disable button in the lower centre of your screen to prevent students from submitting the attendance code further.

To end the session all together, click on the blue drawer pull button on the far left and then select END to finish the attendance session and return to your course home page.

The data collected while taking attendance with Top Hat will be stored in the gradebook where it can be easily reviewed, managed or exported to an Excel spreadsheet.

Student Attendance Submissions
Students who choose to interact with Top Hat via SMS/text message will simply send a SMS/text message with the attendance code as projected on the front screen to the region-specific SMS response number that is indicated.

Students who access Top Hat by web browser or mobile application will be prompted to input the attendance code into the provided field.

To prevent misuse of the system students only get 3 attempts at entering the correct code.
