Professor: Android Application

If you feel as though your ability to reach your students is limited, literally, on account of being tethered to the podium computer in your lecture hall, we have the ideal solution for you! Top Hat is pleased to announce that we have launched a specially designed application for Android devices that will allow you to escape the podium and grant you the ability to teach and instruct anywhere in your classroom. This guide will introduce you to the essentials of using the Top Hat Android application.

If you haven’t already created a professor's account, please navigate to using a web browser and create an account and all the courses you will need for the semester. Using the web browser, build the Questions, Discussions, etc. that you intend to use in your upcoming lecture. You will also likely want to upload your still/static PowerPoint or PDF presentations into your course using the Files Module - for additional information on how to do this, please click here.

Downloading the App
Once you have content created in your course you are now ready to dive into the Top Hat Android application. To install the app visit the Play Store on your device and search for “Top Hat”. Once installed, the app will be available on your Android's home screen.

Getting Started
The Android device will transmit the information you wish to share with your students directly to their devices using the classroom's wireless network and the Top Hat servers.

To display the content onto the classroom projector screen, you must be logged into your Top Hat course from a podium or laptop computer connected to your classroom projector.

Launch the Top Hat Android application and login.

Upon logging in on your Android device, you will arrive in your Lobby. Clicking on the icon in the top left corner will provide you with a direct link to our Support Team, access to your Top Hat Account Details, and the option to logout. It is also here in the Lobby where you can select the course you would like to present content from.

Presenting Your Lecture
Once you are ready to begin your lecture simply tap on the '+' symbol in the top right hand corner and select what you'd like to transmit to your students.

If it's one of your PowerPoint or PDF presentations, tap on the item you'd like to present.

Your slides will now be visible on your Android device, on your students' devices, and if you have the same Top Hat course open on the computer connected to the projector, your slides will also be visible on your classroom's screen!

You can cycle through your slides using the navigation arrows on the bottom of your app, and even jump to a specific slide if need be. You can also make use of our annotation tool by clicking the pen icon in the bottom left corner of your Android device and then annotate your slide using your finger or a stylus!

Taking Attendance
You can choose to take Attendance at any point during you lecture. To do so, simply tap on the "+" icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and then select the Attendance option. This will display the 4-digit attendance code on your projected screen for students to submit in order to have their attendance recorded. To finish the Attendance session tap "CLOSE" in the bottom right-hand corner.

Asking Questions
At any point during your lecture you can ask your students a Top Hat question. To do so, tap on the "+" icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. This will give you access to all of your Top Hat course content and you simply need to select the Top Hat question you'd like to ask. The question will now be visible on your Android device, on your students' devices, and if you have the same Top Hat course open on the computer connected to the projector, the question will also be visible on your classroom's screen for students who are reliant on SMS/text message submission.

Tap on "DISABLE SUBMISSIONS" at the bottom of your Android device to prevent students from being able to submit answers to your question any longer. If you'd like to share the results with your students, simply select "SHOW RESULTS" in the bottom left corner and the histogram of student responses will be displayed on your projected screen in your classroom.

When you are finished with the Question, simply select "CLOSE" in the bottom right hand corner and continue on with your lecture. It's that simple!
