Note: Due to software restrictions our app is only available on iOS 7.1 or later.
Creating an Account and Signing In
Upon opening the app for the first time, you will be prompted to sign in using your Top Hat account credentials. Please note that your Top Hat account credentials give you access to Top Hat on any device, you do not need to create a new account when using a new device. If you have previously created a Top Hat account simply login!
If you have not yet created a Top Hat account, you can create a 7-day free trial account using the app. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete the account creation process. You’ll require your course’s 6-digit join code which your professor will likely have provided to you on your course syllabus.
In order to ensure you receive credit for the submissions made during your 7-day free trial, you’ll want to ensure you log in to your Top Hat account using a web browser on a computer during this trial period to upgrade your account by purchasing a Top Hat subscription. Additional information on this process can be found here: Completing your Mobile Registration
After signing in you will be brought to the My Courses page which will show you a list of all the Top Hat courses you’re currently enrolled in, allow you to remove yourself from courses you no longer need, enroll in additional courses, and navigate between courses.
You can enroll in as many courses as needed. To enroll in a new course tap + Add Course at the bottom of your list of courses or the + icon in the upper right hand corner and search for your course using your professor’s 6-digit Top Hat course join code. Once you’ve located the applicable course simply tap Enroll.
To disenroll or remove yourself from a course simply tap on the Remove option associated with the course you’d like to disenroll from. Should you remove yourself from a course accidentally, not to worry, you can always add the course again and your grades and course information will be restored.
The Lecture tab will display active lecture elements such as questions, discussions, tournaments, and attendance as your professor activates them.
The Content tab will give you access to homework, textbooks, and other content your professor has given you access to outside of class. Once in the tab you will find that the contents will be divided into Unanswered items and All Content so you can easily identify what your top priorities are! Simply tap on the item, select or type your response, and be sure to tap the blue Submit button.
The Gradebook tab will allow you to view your Top Hat Gradebook from you mobile device.
The Offline Mode tab will allow you to manually activate Top Hat’s Offline Mode for submissions if you ever lose internet connection during class. For further information on this great feature please see here: Offline Mode Submissions
When your professor activates questions, discussions, tournaments, or attendance, the item will be displayed on your screen and you’ll simply select your choice or type your response in the field provided. You’ll want to ensure you tap Submit once you’re done so you receive credit for your submission!
After responding to an item, a blue notification will appear confirming the submitted response. You may change your mind and resubmit your answer as long as the item is still active and your professor hasn’t yet deactivated it. Top Hat will only record the last response submitted before the item was deactivated.
Detailed explanations of how to submit to each of the question styles, discussions, and attendance can be found here: Student iOS Submissions
