Professor: Creating and Using Announcements

Need to send a quick message to students? 

Announcements is a tool that lets professors and university administration send important messages to students enrolled in Top Hat courses. Students will receive these messages as a notification through the Top Hat website, their email, as well as a text message (if their phone has been registered with their account).

Professors can send messages to all of the students in their course simultaneously. University administrators can send messages to all of the students and professors enrolled in or administering Top Hat courses at their university. 

Sending an Announcement

You can send Announcements from your course Lobby. (If you are in an course, you can return to the lobby by clicking on the Top Hat icon in the top left-hand corner). Once in the Lobby, you can click on the bell icon beside the specific course to which you'd like to send an Announcement: 

Clicking on the bell icon will open the “Recent Announcements” pop-up (below).  If you haven’t sent any announcements yet, then you will see the message, “No announcements” in the pop-up. To send a new announcement, select the link in the top right of the pop-up that says, “Send New”.  

You will then be able to select whether you would like to send the message to all students, all co-professors, or everyone who is part of that Top Hat course using the drop-down. You will then type the message that you would like to send in the text box. You would then hit the blue “Send” button at the bottom of the pop-up.

Note: Please note that there is a limit of 140 characters per announcement. 

Once the announcement has successfully been sent, you will see a green banner at the top of the page that reads, “Announcement sent!” To get rid of this banner, you can simply click on it.  

This is what your students would receive on the website, as a text message, and in their email inbox respectfully.
