Professor: Taking Attendance (Old Top Hat)

Want to boost and automate students' attendance?

Top Hat’s Attendance Module helps you quickly track students’ attendance and takes care of all the calculating. Clicking the “Take Attendance” button will generate a 4-digit code, which is only visible on the professor’s screen. This means students must be in class to submit attendance.

Check out the following video tutorial to learn more, and then complete the accompanying tutorial exercises. All told, we estimate this Top Hat Orientation course will take you just 3 minutes!

Taking and Recording Attendance

The Attendance Module
Taking Attendance in Top Hat is quick and easy. Each time a new attendance session is started, Top Hat generates a random 4-digit attendance code. This code is only displayed on the projected screen in your lecture hall. Students may check in for attendance by either texting the attendance code to the Top Hat SMS Response number, or directly entering it into the provided field from their laptop or mobile device.

Attendance data is stored in the Gradebook where it can be easily reviewed, managed or exported to an Excel spreadsheet.

To start a new attendance session, click the blue Take Attendance button to generate a 4-digit attendance code (see below).

At this point, your account will display the attendance code for that session.

Students who choose to interact with Top Hat via SMS/text message will simply send a SMS/text message with the attendance code as projected on the front screen to the region-specific SMS response number that is indicated.

Students who access Top Hat by web browser or mobile application will be prompted to input the attendance code into the provided field:

To prevent misuse of the system students only get 3 attempts at entering the correct code.

If you want to leave Attendance open throughout class time, clicking on Demagnify will shrink Attendance and allow you to continue working in your course. The attendance code and percentage of students present, remains visible in the content area (see below). Clicking Magnify will expand the Attendance window back to full size.

When you’re happy with the Attendance percentage, you can click on Finish Attendance to close that session. The information will be stored in the Gradebook for future review.

Is there a way to mark someone present after the attendance interface has been closed?
