Professor: Why Do I Have Unregistered Students?

If you see that you have Unregistered Students it simply means that students have submitted responses to your questions, discussions, or attendance in class through SMS/text messaging but have not yet created Top Hat accounts or have not yet linked their mobile phone number to an account that they created.

These Unregistered Students are merely a phone number until they complete the Top Hat registration process and associate their phone number with their Top Hat account. For this reason, you will have no way of identifying them as they have not yet included their name or email address, they are just a phone number, and In the interest of privacy, you will not be able to access the phone numbers of unregistered students.

Unregistered students' grades will not appear in the Gradebook as their participation with Top Hat is not made official until they complete their account registration. When unregistered students complete the Top Hat registration and link their mobile phone number to their Top Hat account their previous responses will be automatically associated with their account and they will appear properly in the Gradebook. The completion of the registration process must be completed within 7 days for students to have the responses and grades submitted by SMS linked to their account.

As students complete the full registration process you will find that the number of unregistered students in your course will decrease. If it’s late in the term, it’s likely that these students have dropped the course, and if you’d like for their responses to be removed from your Gradebook simply email support@tophat.com, being sure to include the course join code, and let us know you’d like for us to remove the unregistered students.

When it comes to Unregistered Students, they are merely a phone number until they complete the Top Hat registration process and associate their phone number with their Top Hat account.     So how do I find the phone numbers of the unregistered students?

    Thanks for reaching out to Top Hat Support. In the interest of privacy, you will not be able to access the phone numbers of unregistered students. Although it is possible for us to remove these students from your Top Hat course, if the student later associates that phone number with their Top Hat account they will have lost all of the grades previously earned through submissions from that number.     This is a bit confusing to me. Shouldn't they be merely an email, not a phone number? Since it is an email they receive in order to register, and it is the email we as instructors provide? Are we able to access what emails were invited but did not register? Thanks!

Yes - students who receive the email invitation, but have not yet enrolled in your Top Hat course will appear on your Pending Students page within your course's Student Manager.
