Professor: Using Course Packs to Export and Import Your Content (Old Top Hat)

Top Hat’s Course Packs allow you to bundle all of your Top Hat content and transfer it between sections or into new courses. You can use a Course Pack once at the end of your semester or incrementally throughout.

Creating and Loading Course Packs

Course Packs allow professors to bundle and export course content (ie. Questions, Discussion, Files) from one course or section and import it to another.

Creating a Course Pack

Creating a Course Pack bundles all selected Top Hat content from one course or section, for exporting to another course or section. You may also set the permissions for a Course Pack to control who is authorized to access your course material.

Click on Course Packs, then click on the ‘Create a new course’ link. Next, select the Top Hat content you want to include in your Course Pack by checking the appropriate boxes. Once you have selected the items you would like to publish, click Next in the bottom of the dialogue.


Finally, enter a title and a subject category for the Course Pack. You may also enter a password to limit who is able to access and import your Course Pack. Click Save to finish creating your Course Pack.


Loading a Course Pack

Loading a Course Pack will add all selected content (i.e. Questions, Files, or Discussions) to a course. To load a course pack, click on Course Packs located in the dashboard. Next, in the Course Pack dialogue box, select 'Load a course pack'.


You can filter the list of available course packs by either selecting a subject from the Category drop-down menu, or checking the ‘Only show my course packs’ box. Next, select a course pack by clicking on the the course pack name. If a course pack has a grey key icon to the right of it, a password will be required in order to load its contents.


After selecting a Course Pack, select the Top Hat content that you would like to import by clicking on the appropriate boxes. Once you have selected the content you wish to import (note that by default everything in the course pack is selected), click the Import button at the bottom of the dialogue box in order to import the selected content.


To edit a Course Pack, first log into the course used to create the Course Pack. Next, click on Course Packs in the Dashboard, then Edit an existing course pack. You man now edit the Top Hat content contained in your Course Pack.

After editing the content of your Course Pack, you may also edit the description and password. Click Save to finish editing the contents of the Course Pack. For the edited content to be updated in any other courses or sections, you must first re-import the edited Course Pack into the appropriate courses or sections.
